Independence Day

Sept 15th was Mexican Independence Day. For weeks leeding up to it the Zocalo has been abuzz with music and activity. (Including lots of old folks dancing to danzon and little kids playing corridos on guitar. The Zocalo was also full of police for the night of the 15th, an effor to keep out APPO protesters and to display their power. Last year APPO had taken over the Zocalo and government buildings, and held their own festivities. This year APPO held their alternative event/protest at the Iglesia Santo Domingo, a few blocks from the "oficial" celebration. Afterwards, the streets were full of people spraying each other with foam and cracking confetti-eggs on each others' heads and looking for a party (including ourselves.)
